Kalmykia to mark the Day of Buddha Shakyamuni’s Descent from the Heaven of 33 Deities on 1 November

Kalmykia is preparing to celebrate one of the four most important Buddhist holidays — the Day of Buddha’s Descent from the Heaven of 33 Deities. For devotees, this is more than just a date on the calendar; it is an occasion to reflect on the power of kindness, gratitude and compassion.

This year, the holiday falls on 1 November — the 22nd day of the 9th month, the month of the Mouse, in the lunar calendar. The date changes every year, making the opportunity to share this day with the monastic Sangha especially precious.

The story behind the holiday warms the heart. After attaining Enlightenment, Buddha ascended to the heavenly abode where his mother, Queen Mahamaya, resided. For three long months, he shared the Teaching with her — expressing his gratitude as a son. When people on earth began asking him to return and bring the light of the Dharma to them as well, Buddha responded. This is a profound example of compassion and love: he thought both of the person closest to him and of everyone who needed his wisdom.

On this day, the Central Khurul of Kalmykia will hold a festive prayer service — commemorating Buddha’s great deed and his boundless kindness. It begins at 9:00. After the service, everyone will be offered traditional refreshments: fragrant tea and bortsoki.

This holiday reminds us that spiritual practice — is not only about prayers, but also about actions. Caring for our parents, supporting someone who is struggling, treating those around us with patience and kindness — these are especially important on this day.
