The Prayer Distributed to the Faithful During the 14th Dalai Lama’s Visit to Russia in 1992
During the visit of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama to Russia in 1992, sheets with prayers for daily recitation were distributed to the faithful. Although these sheets are kept at home on the altar by many of the faithful, their content remains a mystery. Presented here are a translation and transcription of the Tibetan text of the prayers in order to shed light on their content. གང་གིས་ཐུགས་བརྩེས་ཉེར་བཟུང་སྟེ། །GANG GI TUG TSE NYER SUNG TE ལྟ་བ་ཐམས་ཅད་སྤངས་པའི་ཕྱིར། །TA VA TAM CHE PANG PE CHIR དམ་པའི་ཆོས་ནི་སྟོན་མཛད་པའི། །DAM PE CHÖ NI TÖN DZE PE གཽ་ཏམ་དེ་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །GO TAM DE LA CHAG TSEL LO I bow before Gautama, who, guided by compassion, in order to cast aside all views, teaches the supreme dharma! ཨོཾ་མུ་ནི་མུ་ནི་མཧཱ་མུ་ནི་ཡེ་སྭཱཧཱ། OM MUNI MUNI MAHAMUNAYE SVAHA (Mantra of Buddha Shakyamuni) ཨོཾ་མ་ཎི་པད་མེ་ཧཱུྃ། OM MANI PADME HUM (Mantra of Avalokiteshvara) ཨོཾ་ཨ་ར་པ་ཙ་ན་དྷཱིཿ། OM ARAPACHANA DHI (Mantra of Manjushri) ཨོཾ་ཏཱ་རེ་ཏུཏྟཱ་རེ་ཏུ་རེ་སྭཱཧཱ། OM TARE TUTTARE TURE SVAHA (Mantra of Tara) ཁྱོད་ལ་བསྟོད་ཅིང་གསོལ་བ་བཏབ་པའི་མཐུས། །KYÖ LA TÖ CHING SOL VA TAB PE TÜ བདག་སོགས་གང་དུ་གནས་པའི་ས་ཕྱོགས་དེར། །DAG SOG GANG DU NE PE SA CHOG DER ནད་དང་དབུལ་ཕོངས་འཐབ་རྩོད་ཞི་བ་དང་། །NE DANG UL PONG TAB TSÖ SHI VA DANG ཆོས་དང་བཀྲ་ཤིས་འཕེལ་བར་མཛད་དུ་གསོལ། །CHÖ DANG TA SHI PEL VAR DZE DU SOL I pray, grant that by the power of the praise and supplication offered to you, in the place where I and others dwell, illness, poverty, strife, and conflict may vanish, and the Dharma and well-being may increase! བསོད་ནམས་འདི་ཡིས་ཐམས་ཅད་གཟིགས་པ་ཡི། SÖ NAM DI YI TAM CHE SIG PA YI གོ་འཕང་ཐོབ་ནས་སྐྱོན་གྱི་དགྲ་བཏུལ་ཏེ། །GO PANG TOB NE KYÖN GYI DRA TUL TE རྒ་དང་ན་དང་འཆི་བའི་རླབས་འཁྲུག་པའི། །GA DANG NA DANG CHI VE LAB TRUG PE སྲིད་པའི་མཚོ་ལས་འགྲོ་བ་སྒྲོལ་བར་ཤོག །SI PE TSO LE DRO VA TROL VAR SHOG By these merits, may I, having attained the state of omniscience, subdue the enemies in the form of flaws, and free living beings from the ocean of samsara, in which rage the waves of old age, illness, and death! ཏཱ་ལའི་བླ་མས། རབ་བྱུང་བཅུ་བདུན་པའི་ཆུ་སྤྲེལ་ཕྱི་ལོ་ ༡༩༩༢ ལོར་སྤེལ་བ་དགེ། །། The 14th Dalai Lama composed this [text] in the Water-Monkey year of the 17th rabjung, i.e., in 1992.
