The First Pre–New Year Long-Life Rituals to Be Held at the Central Khurul of Kalmykia This Coming Weekend

This coming weekend the first life-extension rituals will be held at the Central Khurul of Kalmykia. Due to the unfavorable covid-19 situation, the rituals will be held online. According to tradition, before the beginning of the “Zul” celebration the monks perform the “Nasan utdulhn” (life-extension) rituals. Every year at the Central Khurul the life-extension rituals are performed through three deities of longevity: Amitayus, Ushnishavijaya and White Tara. Before the beginning of the rituals the monks recommend cultivating the correct, virtuous motivation within oneself. The monks also call for praying during the rituals not only for oneself, but for all living beings, as well as for the swiftest end to the pandemic. As Yonten Gelong, senior administrator of “The Golden Abode of Buddha Shakyamuni,” noted, as followers of the Buddha’s teaching we understand the whole value of a precious human birth and must strive to use our life to bring benefit to all living beings and ultimately to attain enlightenment. “As for holding the prayer services online, personal presence at the khurul is not so important. Wherever on the globe you may be at that moment, if you pray sincerely, then the benefit of this ritual will certainly be the same as if you were personally present in the Dugan,” he added. In total six rituals are planned, which will be held on weekends until December 10. These rituals and prayer services are especially significant for those born in the Year of the Ox (the coming year) and in the Year of the Sheep — the opposite of the Year of the Ox.
